10 · Burtuqāl Yāfā

The Shamouti is the Jaffa orange, distinguished by its oval shape and thick peel. It was developed by Arab farmers near Jaffa in the middle of the nineteenth century, and exports grew from about 200,000 oranges in 1845 to 38 million by 1870 [1]. For a century the fruit was the Palestinian coast's most famous product — and, in the Institute for Palestine Studies' phrase, a land of rebellious oranges [2].

Jaffa fell on 13 May 1948, the day before the Mandate ended, and most of its roughly 70,000 Arab inhabitants fled [3]. The groves passed to other hands; the name stayed on the crates.

The drawing is a herbarium sheet: one whole fruit with a leaf and a navel, one half in cross-section with the Shamouti's thick peel and ten segments, two strips of paper tape. The caption uses the city's Arabic name and a year — never the stencilled crate mark, which belongs to someone else.
