Olive groves cover about forty-five per cent of the cultivated land of the West Bank and support somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 families [1]. The tree is, as the UN Development Programme puts it, more than just a tree: inheritance and income at once [2]. Since 1967 an estimated 800,000 olive trees have been uprooted in the occupied territory [3] — an estimate, which is why it lives on this page and not on the cloth. On 30 March 1976, Land Day, Palestinian citizens of Israel struck against the expropriation of some 20,000 dunams in the Galilee; six unarmed protesters were killed, and the date has been marked every year since [4].

The word on the chest, zaytūn, has exactly six dots. Each is drawn as a small olive. On the back is the tree: ten single leaves, two olives, one trunk, and seven roots drawn longer than the crown, held to the sheet with paper tape. The caption says only since 1967, the year the occupation began [5].
